Books that have film Adaptations

Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay

(CONTAINS SPOILERS.)

Its the story of a school expedition to Hanging Rock on Valentine’s Day 1900. A teacher and some of the students go missing, and events unfold for many of the remaining characters.

I don’t know why I read this. I think I knew more about it from its reputation more than anything else. I talked with my mum about it and it seemed to be almost an urban legend in the 1970s when the film was made. But it was an interesting book, to be sure.

Its probably more the inner fear of disappearence and fright that makes this book have such a large fanbase of people that scour libraries across Australia and the rest of the world in an effort to find out the mystery. Maybe a version of the film should be done in the next few years…perhaps pulling the story into the 21st century?
