Books for Teens

The Rachel Riley Diaries (The Time of My Life) by Joanna Nadin.

“I could have been living the time of my life, instead of waiting for my life to start,”

This is the last book in the Rachel Riley series of books, aimed at teenagers. And I am not ashamed to say that I read this one, and enjoyed it immensely.

It covers approximately a period of January – September. Rachel is about to go off to study Drama at University of Hull, and she still has to cope with her crazy family and her eclectic (?!) group of friends. She is also trying to find her ‘soulmate’ and manages to try and navigate a friendship with a garishly dressed gay arsonist as well as wrangle with her feelings for her childhood friend, Jack Stone, brother of her best friend, Scarlet.

Now, these books aren’t meant to be particularly well-written. At least they are written in full sentences, and are very witty. It is good to see that Rachel does grow up emotionally at the end and, really, it is a last hurrah. And that makes me sad, because I have followed the story (apart from one) from the beginning. Rachel is grown up. She has gone out into the big wide world, and the ending tied up all the loose threads. Reading the previous book, I had certain expectations of how particular plot arcs should pan out. My expectations were dashed. Even if everything turned out for the best, the twists were unexpected but still displayed with the dry laconic wit that Rachel is given.

This series was one of the few times when the ‘teen diary’ book style worked. The characters were funny, the wit was dry and laconic. Thank you, Joanna Nadin, for writing such a super finale to a fantastic book series.

MY RATING: 5 / 5.
